Fuel Cell technology…

With concerns about climate change, pollution, increasing demands for energy and ever increasing price of fossil fuels, the need for alternative low-emission sources of power has never been greater.

In response to the emerging demand from Linnet Technology customers, in association with our partner Auriga Energy Ltd, we have developed a hydrogen powered fuel cell backup power system.

In simple terms, a fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen (from the air) to produce energy, with heat and water produced as by-products. The electrochemical cell captures the electrical energy of the chemical reaction between liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen and converts it into electrical current. The fuel cells produced are combined to form a ‘stack’, in order to provide the levels of power output required for practical use.

Generating electricity from hydrogen is a clean, highly efficient, electro-chemical process, producing no emissions or toxic waste. It can effectively contribute to an organisation’s corporate sustainability and carbon reduction initiatives, in addition to offering a range of commercial and environmental benefits.

Our current reliance on traditional diesel generators and battery systems is not sustainable and we all have a responsibility to look after our environment.

Hydrogen fuel cell UPS / backup power systems can help achieve tangible reductions in carbon emissions and help achieve sustainability targets.

Key system parameters:

modular system for a wide range of powers

a range of operational voltages

matched inverter to deliver required AC power

wide operational temperature range -20ºC to 50ºC

utilises industrial grade hydrogen

zero-emissions

quiet operation

operational runtime virtually unlimited

high reliability, longer life and low maintenance

lower whole life costs

installed indoors or outside

remote monitoring options through ethernet or wireless

no toxic/diesel waste or spillage problems

Linnet Technology’s Technical Director Jim Laughlin will be attending the World Future Energy Summit, which is being held in Abu Dhabi in January 2012.

The World Future Energy Summit is the world’s foremost annual meeting committed to advancing future energy, energy efficiency and clean technologies by engaging political, business, finance, academic and industry leaders to drive innovation, business and investment opportunities in response to the growing need for sustainable energy. It represents an unrivalled business platform bringing together project owners and solution providers with investors and buyers from both the public and private sectors.

It is held in Abu Dhabi because not only is it the capital of the United Arab Emirates, it is a global leader in energy. The Emirate, one of the world’s leading producers of oil and gas, is investing heavily to become a regional and international powerhouse in renewable and sustainable energy knowledge, technology and capacity.

It is important for Jim Laughlin to attend this event on behalf of Linnet as Abu Dhabi is investing considerable resources to the advancement and adoption of renewable energy. The country also provides substantial funding to the International Renewable Energy Agency and working towards a 7% renewable energy target by 2020, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development has offered $50 million in annual loans to finance renewable energy projects in developing countries.

Linnet are continually working on making sure they are offering the very best in power supply for their customers, this is why events such as the World Future Energy Summit are so important.

As a company who are continuing to grow their business despite the recession, Linnet Technology were asked to host a visit from Murdo Fraser, the MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife.

Mr Fraser visited Linnet’s head office in Stirling on the 8th August as part of a special scheme designed to encourage politicians to be more “in touch” with local businesses.

The visit had been arranged as part of the Business Buddy scheme, which was recently launched by the Forum of Private Business – a not-for-profit business support organisation which Linnet Technology is a member of.

According to the FPB, the visit objectives are to afford the MSP an insight into how the company operates and learn about the issues it currently faces.

The team at Linnet were asked to give their views on how the Government can help SME businesses in Scotland.

Jean Laughlin (Managing Director of Linnet Technology Ltd) said “We believe the Government needs to improve business confidence if we are to beat this recession. i.e. address the issues relating to the Banking situation.” Jim Laughlin (Technical Director) expressed his concerns over the lack of manufacturing in this country “it is widely recognised that countries who manufacture, recover from recession in a shorter time period.”

Jim and Jean both agreed that, particularly in Scotland, cutbacks in Public Sector jobs will impede the overall growth as this will add to unemployment figures with no Income Tax/ NI being generated by people in employment.

Mr Fraser later commented “I welcomed the opportunity to meet the owners of Linnet Technology and hear directly from them their concerns about the current economic situation, and the difficulties of doing business in the United Kingdom in the present climate.”

He continued “Politicians do need to hear directly from those at the coal face about the issues that affect them. I am grateful to the Forum of Private Business for setting up this meeting and allowing me to hear more about this successful local business. I took away from the meeting a number of key concerns around Government economic policy, business confidence, the approach of HMRC to business, and over regulation, and I will be discussing these with colleagues both at Holyrood and Westminster.” Murdo Fraser MSP
